Claypool fourth graders recently grew several types of bibbed lettuce in a classroom tower garden. Students enjoyed watching the tiny seeds sprout and GROW. It was nice to have something “GREEN” inside our classroom through the wind, rain, and snow of March. The lettuce was harvested and shared with our local Someplace Else Saloon. The Archers, owners, were grateful for our beautiful FRESH produce. They showcased it on top of their yummy sandwiches, in wraps, and salads. Our very own Mrs. Rees delivered the
fresh produce and was the very first to enjoy! Jamie Archer was sure to let customers know the lettuce was grown locally by Claypool students. Through Mrs. Archer, Claypool students also learned that bibbed lettuce has a much greater shelf life and more nutrients than iceberg lettuce. We were informed the Saloon moved away from using iceberg lettuce due to the lack of nutrients and poor shelf stability.
The Someplace Else Saloon and its patrons support Claypool students in many different ways, including with our Backpack Food program. Helping the Archers feed the patrons of Someplace Else Saloon seemed like the best thing to do to show our thanks! As always, the Knights are happy to give back to our community, and we will continue to do so. Our tower garden is reloaded and already growing more!
